- America has a rich tradition of non-citizen soldiers that started with the American Revolution, and is typified by Jose Gutierrez, one of the first U.S. soldiers to die in Iraq. Gutierrez, an orphan who came from Guatemala to the U.S. illegally, was awarded citizenship posthumously.
