- Two years ago it was discovered that half of all the sapphires in the world lie buried in Madagascar, an impoverished island in the Indian Ocean. The discovery has the potential to bring a much-needed boost to the island's economy but authorities collect only a small fraction of the taxes due on the stones which disappear from Madagascar and find their way to the world market.
