- Summary:
- After a reign of thirty-two years, President Suharto of Indonesia was forced to resign as a result of a raging crisis. That happened in 1998. It was the beginning of a turbulent period that is called the Reformasi in Indonesia. Since then, the ongoing political changes in Indonesia have been accompanied by uprisings, poverty and insecurity. Two hundred million Indonesians suffer as a result. This also applies to the main characters in The Position of the Sun: the 60-year-old woman Rumidjah, her sons Bakti and Dwi and her friend Ibu Sum. Once every four months, Rumidjah and her friend go to the village of their birth to help the family in the countryside with the harvest - and casually - to get a piece of the pie. For Rumidjah's sons, it is different; Their world is the city. Bakti, the youngest, spends his days gambling, pigeon racing and games. He also fights with the students against the military. Dwi, his brother, is annoyed by this lawlessness. He believes that Bakti should find a job and get involved in politics through the 'normal' way: through the ballot box. Rumidjah's girlfriend Ibu Sum has no time for politics. She lives among the garbage collectors. The already difficult position of this profession has been exacerbated by the economic crisis. That is why the waste collectors now also have to work at night. The position of the sun is a documentary in the tradition of the 'Cinema Vérité': without intervening, without interviewing and without voice-over text, the maker shows aspects of everyday life. Yet filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich not only observed life in Indonesia, he was also involved in it. During the filming of a demonstration in 1995, he was arrested and first imprisoned on suspicion of espionage, then declared persona non grata. It was not until 1997 that he was able to return to Indonesia. From that moment on, he has followed Rumidjah and her family with the camera.
