Artist book; variable accordion fold with gatefold softcover punctuated by 2 red threads, one serving as 2-pronged fastener to keep the covers closed, the other running through all internal folds and their central designs; Letterpress printed cover (SFCB Vandercook letterpress); digital printed interior in black and red; accordion fold interior pages taped into wrap-around paper cover; central thread tie tipped with 1 Japanese glass bead.
Inspired by East Asian legends and a love for embroidery, The Red Thread incorporates the physical element of a single red thread and weaves it throughout the book, connecting typography-based parallel narratives exploring the differences and similarities between fate and destiny. -- Publisher's website.
According to East Asian legends, it is said that an invisible, unbreakable red cord is tied around the pinky (or ankle) of those whose lives are fated to intertwine. While the thread may stretch or contract or even tangle, the two parties are decidedly connected -- physically bound by the God of Fate. The proposed book will incorporate the physical red thread into its form and use the thread as a means to weave narrative together. -- Artist statement from artist's website, rkaodesigns.
