Summary:
- "Unlike most faux documentaries on jazz, Icons Among Us provides a Spirit wealth of dynamic performances without voice overs. This episode, In the Spirit of Family, zeroes in on the communal nature of jazz when band members gather together and make music that drummer Brian Blade says is "dormant on paper" but comes alive when the band cooperates on bringing it alive in real time. Co-founder of Brian's band Fellowship, pianist Jon Cowherd says there's "intangible chemistry" where "happy accidents can happen onstage." It's all about keeping connection to enhance innovations, such as with the highly charged trio The Bad Plus playing live rampages during the early years of their career that appalled stuck-in-the-mud jazz aficionados. Also featured is soul/hip-hop band Soulive, the Tulsa-based rockers Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Wynton Marsalis's big band, and the Swedish jazz group Esbjörn Svensson Trio that became rock heroes in Europe. With a solid framework throughout their lengthy career, they evolved with the times, bringing electronica into the mix much to the delight of listeners turned off by old-school jazz. They were the present and got lots of screen time, especially appropriate because the pianist leader died in a freak scuba diving accident while the film was being developed. Dan Ouellette".
