"Released in the second half of the 70s, Roots Rock Reggae-Inside The Jamaican Music Scene faithfully captures the golden age of Jamaican reggae. Directed by British documentary filmmaker Jeremy Marre, this film is easily worthwhile for its share of musical testimonies alone. In it we meet a host of groups or performers including the late toaster U-Roy, vocal trios such as the Abyssinians and the Gladiators, but also the producer Lee Scratch Perry (the session at the legendary Black Ark studio is as magnetic as one could hope...), and the already bankable Jimmy Cliff. The plans for the promotional dynamic are not excluded. This is the case of Swing-A-Ling or Randy's record stores and their bins full of freshly pressed singles; Homeric radio shows, with readings from the Bible and ad hoc sound effects; and even the famous sound systems, places of festivities and catalysts for many local productions. In addition to this astonishing panorama, Jeremy Marre takes a lucid look at the Jamaican society of the time: among the elements discussed include Michael Manley and his pro-Cuban socialism, the Rastafarian movement via its invocation of emperor Hailé Sélassié, but also the endemic poverty and its inherent disparities.
