Summary:

"The Summer of Love in 1967 may have rippled the cultural status quo with its countercultural themes of youthful hope and unity, but in being a radical tipping point, it also set into motion two years later the electrifying event that truly rocked the world: the iconic three-day Woodstock outdoor music festival in upstate New York. It started out as a small affair with hopes of selling 50,000 tickets that ballooned into a "freebie" event that attracted nearly 500,000 music enthusiasts. Many in a drug-addled state, they crowded together in a huge muddy field for nonstop music well into the night. It climaxed the final morning with the headliner Jimi Hendrix (featuring his feedback-drenched solo rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner"). In its 50th anniversary, the impressive and well-crafted one-hour documentary, Woodstock: Three Days That Changed Everything, not only celebrates the event populated largely by hippies but also traces its beginnings and its chaotic structure. It also weighs in on its longstanding legacy. The film, hosted by original MTV DJ Mark Goodman, features interviews with the oftentimes inefficient organizers-trying to do something that had never been done before-and locals who were appalled at the invasion of nonconformist young people who clogged rural roads and even the New York State Thruway. A full crew of artists who performed there were also interviewed about their memory of the "experiment in a sea of humanity" that was an oasis of peace during the U.S escalation in the Vietnam War. The spotlight was turned on Richie Havens (he was the opener because the other performers were stuck in traffic and had to be helicoptered to the stage), John Sebastian (who wasn't billed yet was encouraged to play a set), and Country Joe McDonald. Stories of the chaotic set changes were told and anecdotes shared, including how Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young expressed fear in playing their second gig together in front of such a massive crowd. While the music and video of the festival weren't licensed, there's plenty of archival photos that help tell the story of this legendary event that expressed hope in the dark times and a potential to change the world.
