- Summary:
- "You surely recall "Like a Hobo," a hit with which this young English singer marked folk-soul and made a smashing entrance in the musical landscape. This was in 2009, almost another epoch. Fast forward to this recording of the Jazz festival in Vienna that we can confidently define as invigorating. With his acoustic guitar slung over the shoulder, retro suit and hat fixed on the head, one could believe the original formula guiding the imagery of the musician behind the album "Hobo" remains unchanged in the past 10 years, something which is absolutely not true! With a resolutely modern and inventive staging, the trio takes us into a musical universe that has become resolutely more rock from the very start of the show. The probable ""fault"" lies with the two brilliant musicians (drums and keyboards) supporting this singer/multi-instrumentalist, who fluctuates between a slightly dented six-string folk guitar, an electric bass and a keyboard according to the needs of the show. The compositions in the sumptuous ancient theater of Vienna are all as wholesome as they are catchy. Famous and less known choruses follow one another with a certain spirit of freedom that is characteristic of live performances. There is a refreshing array of instrumental flights of fancy, the fruit of improvisations that are presumed to be spontaneous, and a relationship with the audience that the man in the hat maintains with genuine pleasure. We also observe the beautiful spirit of sharing and of freedom, which were also the basic tenets of this culture of vagrancy adopted by a fringe of musicians of the 19th and 20th century (the famous hobos); a heritage from which Charlie Winston draws inspiration with brilliance, organically and without overplayed passivity. Julien D."
