Summary:
- "Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and the saxophonist Sonny Stitt may have made their names in the mid-1940s, but both men were still blowing with as much power and inventive beauty as they ever did more than a decade later. In fact, it might be said that both men were playing better than ever, and proof can be found in this fabulous performance captured at a Brussels concert during that year's all-star Jazz At the Philharmonic tour produced by Norman Granz in 1958. Gillespie and Stitt had worked together during the formative years of bebop and their artistic connection was obviously still solid. Overshadowed by Charlie Parker at the time, Stitt had, by the 1950s, turned from the alto saxophone to the tenor to avoid comparisons. His intense playing on the larger horn displays his full force attack and expressive intensity. He also treats us to his sumptuous alto for a passionate ballad reading of ""Lover Man."" Gillespie too was in great form that night, no matter if it was bounding performances or a ballad. No one could best him at bebop-he did, of course, help invent it. Egged on by an edgy player like Stitt, the trumpeter rises to the occasion, and the results are exhilarating. And when Gillespie and Stitt join in for an uproarious vocal version of ""On the Sunny Side Side of the Street"" you just know these men share a long and fruitful history. With a firm rhythm section kicking from behind, these two bebop giants must have felt that there was no place on earth they would rather have been than that stage that night. Steve Futterman".
