- Summary:
- "A hundred years after his birth, it is a joy to watch a Brussels concert recorded in 1963, when Thelonious Monk began touring Europe on a regular basis. In the quartet format he is so fond of, he lets his faithful associate, Charlie Rouse, express himself at length on three of his songs: ""Evidence,"" ""Ruby My Dear,"" and ""Bright Mississippi."" There is a Monkian paradox present: the uniqueness of the asperities and dissonances is obvious. This genius, who seems locked within himself, who should be perceived as enigmatic because of his work-which upsets melody, harmony, and rhythm-and confusing due to his behavior on stage, always ends up winning the support of the audience. Here, they are mesmerized by the coherence of the mixture of contrasts, like a deer in the headlights. Phlippe Lesage".
