- Summary:
- "In 1966, brilliant jazz pianist Thelonious Monk was riding high in international popularity. He was in the midst of a 14-album stint with major label Columbia Records, and two years earlier he was featured in a cover story for Time Magazine that sparked an interest in and curiosity about his singular style and idiosyncratic music. When he and his steady quartet-saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley-took the stage at la Maison de la Culture d'Amiens on March 23, it was less than a week after the cultural venue had officially celebrated the beginning of its inaugural year. The two Monk sessions feature the unpredictable pianist with his odd-shaped keyboard pounces, playful jabs and cascading lines in storytelling jaunts on such indelible tunes from his standard touring repertoire as "Crepuscule With Nellie," "Rhythm-A-Ning," "Epistrophy" and "Round Midnight." The footage is a black-and-white wonder with profile shots of all the players, a top camera looking down at the band and even a close up of Monk's shoes bouncing to the rhythms. Also captured are Monk's trademark of wandering, circling and dancing around the stage when his bandmates take their ample solos. It's vibrant music that's both an artform and a deep dive into the soul. It's significant that Miles Davis at the time credited Monk as a mentor.**Dan Ouellette*A personal note from Quincy Jones. *Thelonious Monk. A true idol & one of the godfathers of modern jazz composition...A brother who lived & BREATHED musical experimentation. Monk has undoubtedly influenced all great piano players in one way or another & he will always be remembered as a true pioneer. But as Louis Armstrong used to say "play it don't say it!", so please enjoy this special performance that Monk gave from 1966.
