- Summary:
- "Some cities mark the milestones in the history of jazz: New Orleans for being the cradle of jazz, Kansas City where the big bands and swing triumphed, and Los Angeles for its Hollywood studios and cabarets; but it is in New York that jazz flourished, starting in the 1920s. New York, or the definitive meeting point for musicians from all geographical and stylistic backgrounds, is the common thread of this program which pays homage to the East Coast and to those who spent part of their career there if they were not born there. By highlighting only performances captured either at festivals, clubs, or television broadcasts, this program illustrates the jazz scene in full bloom during the 1950s and 1970s. The poster is particularly attractive, with the names of Bill Evans (in duet with Eddie Gomez), Thelonius Monk in trio, Oscar Peterson, Johnny Griffin, and Phil Woods. Ahmad Jamal's performance, with Jamil Nasser on double bass and Vernel Fournier on drums, filmed on a television set, seems to delight his peers gathered around his piano. Seeing Duke Ellington again and again in ""Mood Indigo,"" ""Sophisticated Lady,"" (magnificent countermelody by Duke) and a stunning ""Take the A Train"" in trio as well as ""Tagore"" and ""Passin' Thru,"" the two themes that open new directions in jazz interpreted by Charles Lloyd and his quartet (Keith Jarrett on piano and soprano sax, Ron McClure on double bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums), is almost a must.
