Summary:
- "The Paris audiences love vocalist Kurt Elling and no wonder. He delivers a special melding of smart, poetic, romantic, cool renderings of music with a jazz sensibility that have bold innovations of interpretation, inventive phrasing and occasionally hip scats. He has been the eminent jazz vocal artist for the past two decades, having won DownBeat's prestigious Critics Poll for multiple years, an every one of his albums has been nominated for Grammy Awards with one male vocal award to his credit. Elling is a superb entertainer as seen on this video of his performance at the Jazz à Saint-Germain-des-Prés Festival in 2012. At the time, Ellingh was cresting in popularity with his brilliant album *1619 Broadway - The Brill Building Project* that found him mining for gold with classic songs related to the New York home for popular songwriters Brill Building (which has been called ""the most important generation of popular songs in the Western world""). Elling assembled a top-notch band, including longtime collaborator pianist Laurence Hobgood and stellar guitarist John McLean. At the beginning of the show, Elling promised ""several new things ce soir"" and made good on his guarantee with jazz-fueled renditions of such pop songs as ""I Only Have Eyes for You"" and the opener, ""On Broadway,"" the Drifters 60s hit that was also made super popular by George Benson. In the tune, Elling sings, ""They say there's always magic in the air."" Maybe on Broadway, but certainly this evening in Paris. **Dan Ouellette**".
