"Happy Birthday, Mr. President ... Oops! Mr. Shepp! With a spectacular view of a row of Parisian buildings on Boulevard Raspail, tenor sax in hand, resounding in the silence shattered only by a few shouts, large intimidating eyes and a goatee, he gradually descends by elevator on a scaffold toward the wings of the stage in the gardens of the Fondation Cartier ... and the free-spirited tone of the concert is set. For his 70th birthday, against the sumptuous backdrop of the celebrated foundation for contemporary art, the champion of African-American culture delivers jazz directly along the lines of Impulse! Records, a label to which he had been signed for many years. On the program: the casualness and impertinence of a sax that still inspires envy amoungst musicians, the deep voodoo voice of the free master, who doesn't hesitate to plunge body and soul into the blue waters of the Mississippi during this intimate concert: ""I can't go back to New Orleans!"" he yells, before chanting the word ""revolution,"" like a litany. The revolution continues in the company of American saxophonist David Murray, the wit of Bernard Lubat and his ""totally made up"" piece, the sugary voice of Franco-Beninese singer Mina Agossi and numerous other guests.
