More Details
- Summary:
- Andrew Hill appears in the most arid of settings, that of the solo pianist, and his complex music whose angular breaks can throw the listener off balance deserves attentive listening to discover all of its magnificence (melodies as if in suspension, elastic tempos, unusual intervals, contrasts, mysterious sophistication, sense of transcendence). And in truth, an immediate second listening delivers all of its richness. With his subtle intellect and his sense of paradox, Andrew Hill is a kind of Vladimir Jankélévitch of musical thought (especially since he was also an academic with a doctorate in music theory). Andrew Hill, who left us in 2007 at the age of 77, had Haitian roots that are perceptible, in part, in his rhythmic approach. Although his name is not familiar to the general public, his albums as a leader for the Blue Note label and his achievements as a partner to the greatest instrumentalists of his time (Bobby Hutcherson, Eric Dolphy, Tony Williams, Sam Rivers ...) were admired by his peers for having revolutionized the Hard Bop of his time from within. It is therefore not surprising that a pianist and composer like Anthony Davis, one of the essential voices of contemporary African-American music, recognizes Andrew Hill as a model. As we always tend to look for landmarks, we place Andrew Hill in the lineage of Thelonius Monk and Bud Powell, but it would not be incongruous to bring him closer to certain performances of Duke Ellington in solo or trio, or, for his architecture of silences, to the Catalan composer Federico Mompou, and to Claude Debussy for his exploration of impressionist territories.
