- Summary:
- At the end of 2001, an opera film had its premiere that will certainly soon be one of the great classics of the genre such as Ingmar Bergman's "Magic Flute", Joseph Losey's "Don Giovanni", Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Medea" or Franco Zefirelli's "Traviata": Benoît Jacquot's "Tosca" . A Tosca film with Maria Callas was already planned in 1964, but only the soundtrack was made for it. In 1992 the somewhat controversial "reality" transmission of Tosca appeared at original locations, which ran on television at the "original times" of the action. However, the sensitivity with which Jacquot filmed the "crime Tosca" is unparalleled. He managed the balancing act between a modern film adaptation of a historical crime thriller and an opera performance. With the "dream opera couple" of our day, the married couple Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna in the two main roles of Tosca and Cavaradossi, as well as Ruggero Raimondi as Scarpia, Jacquot naturally had three world-class singers at his disposal who also had excellent acting skills have skills. This allows the director to film close-ups of the singers: it is remarkable that he lets the three protagonists sing and shape their arias calmly and simply without disturbing the musical flow with cinematic "antics". Jacquot uses numerous stylistic means that are entirely new and bear their own signature. For example, he lets the singers act with their mouths closed before or after the music or during passages sung "a parte" (to the side) in some passages set to music. A trick that is not feasible on the opera stage, but which is used here again in such a way that it does not confuse or disturb, but rather structures, interprets and thus explains. At first, the interruptions in the opera's action are surprising, with black-and-white images from the recording studio and occasional exterior shots of the action's scenes in grainy color, setting the mood for the action's ambience. Interestingly, the operatic characters in the film gain in particular through the occasional "interjections" of the acting singers during the musical work and in "civilian", exclusively concentrating on the expression in the music. Young conductor Antonio Pappano can also be seen at work in front of the Royal Opera House Chorus & Orchestra Covent Garden. The film's gorgeous set, props and beautiful costumes are meticulous, and the lighting and cinematography help make this Tosca film incredibly exciting.
