- Summary:
Persecuted by the Pathet Lao (Laotian communists), the Hmongs of Laos took refuge in Thailand. At the end of the 1970s, the French State "established" them in the Amazonian forest, so that they would produce rice. This people of nomadic tradition came with their seeds, made them bear fruit on a land reputed to be uncultivable, until they became the main market gardeners in Guyana. Among the many exotic fruits, the pitaya, a strange and colorful fruit of a dragon-like cactus, has become a must for Guyanese.
