- Summary:
- A situational-form musical composition for ensembles of 8-30 (or more) players. Employs elements of group improvisation, and is open in terms of scale, duration and instrumentation. Each two-page instrumental/vocal part gives separate instructions for each of the two sections of the work. The two sections may be performed in any order or simultaneously. Instrumental/vocal parts are represented graphically on a series of grids. Page one instructs players to perform a series of sixteen tasks sequentially presented on a grid, in one of the following orders: vertically and/or horizontally, left to right, right to left, up to down, or down to up. Page two instructs players to perform in terms of two possible ensemble behaviors: creating responses (group relates to the behavior of other players, and follows grids relating to focus, relationship, and texture) or creating independent materials (group creates its own behavior without reference to others, and follows grids relating to texture and type). "Focus, relationship, and texture" behaviors are the same on each instrumental/vocal part; "type" of behavior is specific to the instrument or voice.
