- Summary:
- This covers the life of what villagers say was "the first" deaf person. It not only chronicles his status as a capable Maya man; it also documents the status of deaf Maya persons and the emerging revelations that there is now, and may have been for centuries, a recessive gene for deafness. Three linguists from Gallaudet survey the situation and one, Bob Johnson, perseveres to explode the myth of deafness' rarity. We visit other villages and towns and find deaf persons both numerous and also accepted and well-integrated in the hearing population.1. The deaf in Yucatan are wholly unalike the deaf in modern societies. 2. Me, the initial investigator, had to reckon with falling for a version of the "single informant" dilemma.
