Summary:
- Objectives: To review the literature on health and life coaching applied for healthcare, its advantages in mental health and cronic conditions.Background: Coaching is a partnership oriented towards the client growth and improvement of their personal or professional skills and well-being. Coaching is a goal-oriented and solution-focused process, it enhances behavior changes, insight, decision making capacity, self-discovery and use of resources. Portugal follows the evolution of coaching practice in other countries, particularly in sports, organizations, career management and leadership, but not in healthcare.Materials and methods: Pubmed literature review of last 15 years with keywords u201ccoachingu201d, u201ccronic diseaseu201d and u201cmental healthu201d.Results: Both health and life coaching applied for cronic conditions, enhance autonomy and provide tools for the client to better identify and use their resources in planning and acting towards the desired goals. Some data support that health coaching increases patient capacity to self-management of their chronic conditions. Motivational interviewing reinforces decision-making capacity, reduces ambivalence regarding to the medication and plays an important role in the treatment of additions. Coaching applied for psychiatric population in recovery phase, helps the patient to visualize their current reality more clearly, as well as to activate resources and to mobilize them for action to achieve a post-recovery life plan with structuring, functional and environmental objectives (family, employment, relationship, communication). Coaching also can improve proactivity, self-regulation and emotion management, as well as decrease risk behaviors.Conclusions: Coaching is a valuable complement intervention which brings benefits to people with mental illness and chronic diseases.
