Information from artist: "Microscopic Book features painted transparent pages to highlight and explore the miniature book's dimension of depth. It is best viewed using any available back light. The book's materials and non-representational images are meant to evoke objects or materials that are enlivened by light, for example, microscope slides, 35mm film slides, kaleidoscopes, fossilized amber, or jars of fruit preserves. Circular windows in the covers provide a partial view of the closed book's contents. This perspective offers the illusion that the layered gaps and painted pages are instead some solid translucent substance. Turning the leaves of the book presents options for viewing various sequences of pages with and through one another. The creation and composition of the stacked images incorporated the element of surprise, found through experimenting with materials and by flipping and rotating the square format cropped tiles. The purely visual book does not have a designated front, back, top or bottom, and may be read beginning at either cover. Eight pairs of transparencies are held inside eight leaves of colored cardstock, folded at their fore edge, which are attached to wrapped boards by nylon cord, sewn across the spine at four stations."
