- General Notes:
- Most of Machaut's lais are monophonic ... [the present performers chose two ... that include polyphony. [The 1st] is a single line in the manuscript, but ... [as Hoppin] pointed out ... successive sections of the melody can sound together ... so [the] performance is in two-voice polyphony throughout ... only one voice sung, the other performed on an instrument. The 2nd lay "[has] just one voice singing the words, while the other two voices vocalized [without words].
