More Details
- Summary:
- Documentary on the astoundingly energetic national dance company of Sierra Leone, on Africa's west coast. In 1964 they won the international dance competition at the New York Worlds Fair with their display of folkloric dances. Several years later they came back on tour and taped this sampling of their repertory, which reflects the cultural diversity and tribal traditions of the country. Commentary by dance authority Faubion Bowers takes the viewer through a variety of dances, and an interview with the company's director, who explains that thirteen different tribal and language groups are represented in this group. Dances shown here -- from several different tribal traditions --include celebrating the harvest, welcoming a visitor, acknowledging a benevolent demon, announcing happiness, and marking an important occasion. The performances feature traditional folkloric instruments and costumes. 1972.
