Summary:

With a great roar, the machine rose straight in the air, then awkwardly veered backward and from side to side. When an observer remarked that the craft wasn't flying forward, its inventor confidently replied, "It is a minor engieering problem that we will solve." Igor Sikorsky's ultimate solution, the first single-rotor helicopter, conquered one of aviation's most difficult challenges and ultimately became the world's most versatile aircraft.
