- "Herbst's ... collection of 172 contemporary songs ... Each song is a contrafactum, including the songs composed by Herbst. Moravian hymn texts are substituted for the poetry used in the original songs ... The word 'hymns' in the title of the collection refers specifically to hymn texts"--page vii.
"The present edition of Hymns to be sung at the pianoforte is based upon the sole autgraph manuscript of the collection housed in the Moravian Museum, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The collection consists of 172 songs in English and is bound as a single collection. The hymn texts used ... were copied or adapted by Herbst from various editions of the English Moravian hymnal Collection of hymns for the use of the Protestant Church of the United Brethren"--page 176.
"Herbst is identified as the composer for the first one hundred pieces ... and J.A.P. Schulz is credited with the remaining pieces [i.e., 101-130]"--page ix. Pieces 131-172 by various composers, including Herbst and Schulz.
