Summary:
- Columbus, in search of better trade routes, opened up a New World--and the minds of Europe. From the vast empires of the Aztecs to the roving tribes of hunters and gatherers, the evidence of cultural evolution as a global process was irrefutable. This program charts the intellectual impact of the European discovery of the New World and the ways in which this discovery influenced both the emergence of anthropology and archaeology as disciplines. Uses excavations in Copan, Honduras, Teotihuacan and Mont Alban, Mexico, to show parallel evolutionary paths between Maya, Zapotec and Aztec civilizations. Describes the development from hunter gatherers to agriculture leading to subsequent social development.
