- Summary:
- In all cultures, people turn to religion for comfort, guidance and an explanation of spiritual continuities beyond life and death. Ritual behavior and sacred spaces and objects give form to religious meanings, and archaeologists are challenged to detect the significance of what they find--even more difficult, to understand this significance and interpret it properly. This program reviews the basic functions of religion, how religion reflects and reinforces social, political and economic institutions, and how it is manipulated as such institutions evolve. Looks at the development of religion using excavations at Momostenago, Guatemala, and Copan, Honduras, to plot the course and political influence of the Mayan religion, and compares religious practices with those of ancient Rome.
