Dialogue is an award-winning weekly radio program that explores the world of ideas through weekly, half-hour conversations with renowned public figures, scholars, journalists, and authors.
In the ancient world culture was a prominent part of a nation's diplomatic strategy. Alexander the Great, for example, saw the implanting of Hellenic culture as an effective way of sustaining his military conquests. Later empires would turn to their artists and intellectuals to advance influence abroad through their appeal to the intellectuals of other lands. In 20th century America cultural diplomacy was first used to great effect, and then largely abandoned. Richard Arndt explains this history.
Two hundred years ago English national character was further defined by the success of Lord Nelson at Trafalgar. Twenty-six English ships defeated a french-Spanish fleet of thirty-three and, in the process, added a new conception of heroism to the British lexicon of values. Qualities like love and honor were enshrined but the foundation for all was an unrestrained violence of OldTestament proportions. Adam Nicolson explains what happened on 21 October 1805.
