- During the cultural revolution in China, two male university students are sent to a small village for reeducation. Amidst backbreaking work they find that music and beautiful young women are the only pleasant things in their miserable lives. Using a cache of forbidden books, including the works of Balzac, they set about to woo the granddaughter of the local tailor, and to teach her things she had never imagined.
