- Marsalis discusses classical music, jazz music, the blues, and his life. He describes the blues as secular optimism or "survival" music. While conducting his band, he encourages improvisation, but not to the point of chaos. Includes commentary from band members, his father Ellis Marsalis, and his brother, Delfeayo Marsalis. First part of filming takes place in New York City (in black & white), second part of filming takes place in his home town of New Orleans (in color).
